ROR (Research Organization Registry) is a community-led project to develop an open, sustainable, usable, and unique identifier for every research organization in the world. ROR is currently led by four organizations-California Digital Library, Crossref, DataCite, and Digital Science-with input from a broader community of stakeholders across the publishing and scholarly communication landscape.

Having launched a minimal viable registry in January 2019 with seed data from Digital Science's GRID database, the ROR project team has started to work with publishers and platform services to identify opportunities to capture ROR IDs wherever affiliations are collected during the submission and publishing process. Adoption of ROR IDs in publishing systems-especially infrastructure built around JATS standards-will enable more efficient discovery and tracking of publications by institution. ROR IDs may be included in metadata registered with Crossref, making unambiguous affiliation information widely and freely available. ROR IDs are a natural fit for JATS as the tag library already supports existing institutional identifiers in the tag. ROR supports crosswalks between identifier types by mapping ROR IDs to other identifiers that exist for a given organization, such as ISNI and GRID. The open infrastructure and community-based approach of the ROR identifier registry can support the broad use and adoption of ROR IDs in JATS as well as in downstream deposits.
